Sequim Named One of America’s Most News-Engaged Cities in National Ranking

SEQUIM — The city of Sequim has earned national recognition as one of the most news-obsessed and intellectually curious communities in the country, according to a new ranking from the global news platform SmartNews.

In a study analyzing per capita news consumption on its app, SmartNews placed Sequim in the top 10 of its “Smartest Cities in America” list, released earlier this month. The rankings highlight small and midsized cities where residents consistently spend the most time reading the news.

SmartNews officials say the data challenges the traditional notion that large cities are home to the most informed citizens. Instead, the company found that smaller communities like Sequim are often filled with highly engaged readers who actively follow local, national, and international news.

The study reviewed news consumption in 999 U.S. cities during the first quarter of 2025. Sequim appears alongside other top-ranking communities such as Haysville, Kansas—the number one city—Green Valley, Arizona, and Port Orchard, Washington. In contrast, major metropolitan areas ranked near the bottom of the list, with New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago all landing in the 900s.
