PORT ANGELES — The Unified Command working cleanup for a tanker spill west of Port Angeles reports beaches and nearshore waters in Port Angeles remain open and safe following last week’s fuel spill into Indian Creek.
In a statement issued Tuesday, officials said sampling and monitoring efforts show no indication that fuel entered the Elwha River Estuary or reached downstream habitats. The Unified Command overseeing the response includes federal, Tribal, state, and local agencies. It includes the Environmental Protection Agency, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, the Washington Department of Ecology, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, and PetroCard. Additional support is being provided by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue, Focus Wildlife, and Republic Services.
Officials also confirmed that the upcoming Paddle to Elwha event will proceed as scheduled.
