Tool Spark Ignites Grass Fire South of Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Fire crews responded swiftly Wednesday afternoon to a grass fire that broke out near a new home site south of Port Angeles.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue was dispatched at 3:09 p.m. to the scene, where about one acre of dry grass was burning. Firefighters arrived quickly and requested support from the Port Angeles Fire Department, which sent a wildland fire engine to assist.

Officials say the fire was sparked by a tool being used by workers on the property. The crew immediately called 911 and began trying to stop the flames from spreading. Thanks to their quick action and the fire departments’ rapid response, the blaze was contained before it reached a nearby tree line.

Clallam 2 responded with two wildland engines, two command vehicles, and seven personnel. Port Angeles Fire added one engine and one command vehicle with three additional crew members.

Fire officials are reminding the public that vegetation is extremely dry across the region, and even small sparks can lead to fast-moving fires.
