PA School Board to take up renaming Stevens Middle School

stevensmiddle

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School District Board of Directors will consider a proposal to rename Stevens Middle School during its regular meeting on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 5:00 PM at the Lincoln Center, 905 W. 9th Street in Port Angeles. The meeting is open to the public and will also be streamed live on the district’s YouTube channel.

The discussion follows plans to replace the existing Stevens Middle School building, which was originally built in the 1950s. The new facility will adopt a 6th–8th grade configuration, expanding the current 7th–8th grade model.

A district-appointed naming committee—composed of students, staff, community members, and representatives from local tribes—has developed a shortlist of four potential names for the new school:

  • Hurricane Ridge Middle School
  • Riverstone Middle School
  • Elwha River Middle School
  • Port Angeles Middle School

Superintendent Michelle Olsen will present the proposed names at the August 7 meeting, along with background information and considerations related to each option. A public comment period will follow the presentation to allow input from community members.

After receiving comments, the Board may take action on the renaming proposal during the meeting.

The school’s new name would be part of broader changes associated with the new building and grade configuration
