State issues emergency closure for salmon fishing

PORT ANGELES – Salmon fishing in Marine Area 6 — the East Strait of Juan de Fuca — is closed through Friday, August 15.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says anglers are on track to hit the summer Chinook fishery’s legal encounter limit of 6,550 fish by the end of the day Sunday. The closure applies to all salmon fishing and retention.

The area will reopen Saturday, August 16 for hatchery coho and pink salmon only under the summer and fall rules in the state’s sport fishing pamphlet.

Fishery managers urge anglers to check the WDFW website for emergency rules before heading out, and to make sure they have the proper license for the fishery.
