Amazon’s project on hold as SEPA deadline looms

BY PEPPER FISHER

Port Angeles – Newsradio KONP reported in May that Amazon had purchased a 25.6-acre property in Port Angeles on Critchfield Road near where it intersects with Edgewood Drive, where the plan is to build a 58,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility.

The new application was deemed complete by City staff on May 6, and on May 17, the City published a Public Notice of application with a 14-day comment period that expired on May 31. The application and associated documents are currently available on the City’s website at cityofpa.us.

The application includes a State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) Checklist, which typically has a 100-day review period. That placed the deadline on Thursday, August 14, barring any complications. A SEPA determination has to be made before any permit applications can be approved by the City.

When asked about the status of the SEPA determination, Shannen Cartmel, the city’s Community & Economic Development Manager, said: “The SEPA determination is currently on hold while we work with the applicant to obtain the remaining information needed for our review. Once all required information is received, the City will proceed with issuing the determination.”

Amazon’s application says they were intending to begin construction in November and finish in June of 2026.
