PORT ANGELES — Irish open-water swimmer John Charles Curley slipped into the chilly waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca at first light this morning, aiming to swim from west of  Port Angeles to Victoria.

The 42-year-old Curley began his journey at about 5:30 a.m., supported by a pilot boat and crew. The 18-mile crossing, known for its strong currents and unpredictable conditions, is regarded as one of the most challenging swims in the Pacific Northwest.

The Dublin native is no stranger to endurance challenges. Over the past three years, Curley has completed some of the world’s most iconic open-water crossings. His résumé includes the 40-kilometer Monterey Bay crossing in California, a 35-kilometer North Channel swim between Northern Ireland and Scotland, and the 26-kilometer Bristol Channel between Wales and England. In July 2024, he achieved the rare “Irish Grand Slam” of open-water swimming. Earlier this year, he added South Africa’s False Bay to his list of international feats.
