LOCAL SPORTS: Roughriders dominate pool and cross country, prep for Homecoming showdown

PORT ANGELES — In swimming yesterday, the Port Angeles Roughriders left Bremerton in their wake with a 124–49 victory. The Riders won 11 of 12 events. First-place ribbons went to Lizzy Shaw in the 200 freestyle, Anaya Tejeda in the 50 free, Lynzee Reid in diving and the 100 freestyle, Amayah Nelson in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, Mia Francis in the 500 free, and Ellie Karjalainen in the 100 breaststroke. Port Angeles also swept all four relays, with Chloe Sanders swimming on the 200 medley relay team.

Roughrider swim captains Lynzee Reid and Lizzy Shaw will be featured on an upcoming VIP Halftime Show.

The Roughriders also hosted an Olympic League cross country meet. The Port Angeles girls finished first and the boys placed fourth. Sequim’s girls came in seventh and the boys sixth. Top-20 finishes for Port Angeles included Leia Larson taking first, Miriam Cobb 12th, Storey Schmidt 14th, and Alice Shields 22nd. For the boys, Easton Dempsey was second, Andre Campbell third, and Leyton Larson 20th. For Sequim, standout freshman Emily Bear placed fifth, Bridget Pyeatt 16th, and Gweneth Voyles 17th.

In tennis, Port Angeles dropped a heartbreaker to Bremerton 4–3. In singles, Grant Butterworth, Owen Leitz, and Teug Carlson all fell in straight sets. In doubles, Jensen Wolfe and Liam Miller won 6–3, 6–1; Alik Ross and Abe Brenkman won 6–2, 6–4; Brett Mason and Gagan Seera won 6–1, 6–3; while Jacob Oberly and Kyler Fowler lost a three-set battle 6–7, 7–5, 4–6. Today, Port Angeles visits Kingston and Sequim travels to Bremerton, both at 3:00.

In volleyball, Sequim is at Port Angeles tonight with first serve at 6:30. On the soccer pitch, Sequim (2–3) faces Port Angeles (4–1) at 7:15. And tomorrow night it’s Sequim at Port Angeles in football — the Roughriders’ Homecoming game at Civic Field.

KONP’s pre-game coverage begins at 6:05 with the Roughriders Locker Room Show featuring seniors Dylan Mann and sophomore Michael Kodis. The Dustin Clark Show follows at 6:18, then the Enemy Coaches Show with Sequim’s Ian Henley at 6:30. The Wolves Locker Room Show with seniors Liam Wiker and Ian Miller airs at 6:42. At halftime, the VIP Show will spotlight 12-year-old Sequim junior rodeo award-winner Skylar Burgett.
