PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles School Board has made it official — Stevens Middle School will soon be known as Hurricane Ridge Middle School.
The decision comes as the district builds a brand-new three-story campus to replace the aging Stevens building, which dates back to the 1950s. The new school will serve sixth through eighth graders under a true middle school model and is set to open in 2028.
A naming committee made up of students, staff, community members, and representatives from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe gathered public input for months before narrowing the options to four: Hurricane Ridge, Riverstone, Elwha River, and Port Angeles Middle School. Hurricane Ridge was chosen for its connection to the iconic Olympic Peninsula landmark, its visibility from campus, and its cultural importance.
School leaders say rebranding will be built into the construction process at no added cost to taxpayers.
