OLYMPIA — Washington State ferry riders will notice higher prices starting today as new fare changes approved by the Washington State Transportation Commission go into effect.
The most visible change is the vessel replacement surcharge, which doubles from 50 cents to $1. That fee is dedicated to funding new ferries and paying down construction costs.
On top of that, most passenger and vehicle fares are going up an average of 3% system-wide. The Commission has set another 3% hike for next May as well.
Peak-season vehicle surcharges are also being adjusted, while multi-ride passes will now last 120 days instead of 90. Seniors, youth, and people with disabilities continue to receive reduced rates, and kids under 19 still ride free unless they’re driving.
The fare increases are part of the state’s plan to raise more than $400 million over the next two years to keep ferries operating and help modernize the fleet
