PORT ANGELES A Port Angeles man is behind bars after deputies say he tried to disguise himself as a Walmart worker during an early morning break-in.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the Port Angeles Walmart just after two a.m. Wednesday on a report of a burglary in progress. An employee told dispatchers that a man—described as in his 50s, balding, wearing glasses and a gray shirt—was trying to force his way inside.

Deputies say the suspect, 47-year-old Gregory T. Shultz, entered the store through an employee entrance while wearing a Walmart vest with a nametag reading “Greg.” Workers immediately recognized he wasn’t an employee and confronted him. Investigators say Shultz then took a “bladed stance” as if to provoke a fight before fleeing, leaving the vest in the parking lot.

His silver Toyota Corolla was found outside the store, and deputies later located him hiding near a truck entrance. Sheriff’s officials say Shultz admitted he had been drinking, went to Walmart to get more beer, and wore the vest to make it appear he was staff.

He was arrested and booked into the Clallam County Jail for attempted second-degree burglary
