Clallam County Weighs $1 Million Grant for Sequim Housing Redevelopment

sunbelt

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Commissioners are set to vote on a resolution authorizing $1 million in affordable housing funds to support an apartment redevelopment project in Sequim.

The proposal would direct money from the county’s Affordable Housing Sales and Use Tax Fund to Serenity House of Clallam County for reconstruction of the Sunbelt Apartments on Fifth Avenue. Sharon Maggart is Executive Director of Serenity House.

“This is a two-story building with 36 apartment units that will provide permanent supportive housing. Permanent supportive housing serves people who are at or below 30% of the area median income and who have disabilities or are chronically homeless. The building will be constructed on the existing site, which will remain operational during construction. Once it’s completed, the current residents will move into the new apartments,” said Maggart.

The project would replace the current 16-unit permanent supportive housing complex, originally built in 1947, with a new 36-unit facility designed to expand long-term housing for people experiencing homelessness.

The county’s Housing Solutions Committee reviewed the funding request and is recommending approval, contingent on Serenity House securing all other necessary financing before any county funds are distributed. That funding must be in place by January 15, 2027.

The $1 million grant would be included in the 2026 county budget, using funds from the Affordable Housing Sales and Use Tax 1590 program, created to support permanent supportive housing projects across Clallam County.
