LOCAL SPORTS: Roughriders Shine on Bainbridge; Pirates Roll in Soccer Sweep

BAINBRIDGE — In an Olympic League cross-country meet on Bainbridge Island, the Port Angeles boys placed third out of seven teams.

Finishing in the top 20 for the Roughriders were:

  • Easton Dempsey, 10th place (17:35.6)
  • Andre Campbell, 12th (17:38.3)
  • Jay Lieberman, 14th (17:41.9)
  • Henry Wendel, 16th (17:44.1)

The Port Angeles girls also finished third as a team.

  • Leia Larson took 2nd overall with a time of 20:13.3
  • Storey Schmidt, 15th (22:20.2)
  • Miriam Cobb, 22nd (22:37.4)
  • Isabella Pickett, 26th (23:58.4)

In swimming, the Port Angeles girls — who have dominated most of their opponents this season — faced their toughest test yet against defending state champion Bainbridge, which won last year’s title by 116 points. The Spartans topped the Roughriders 126–54.

The lone first-place finish for Port Angeles came from Lynzee Reid in diving.

  • Amayah Nelson placed 3rd in the 200 freestyle and 4th in the 100 freestyle.
  • Chloe Kay Sanders was 3rd in the 100 butterfly and 4th in the 200 individual medley.
  • Lizzy Shaw took 3rd in the 50 freestyle.
  • Mia Francis placed 3rd in the 100 freestyle.
  • Ellie Karjalainen finished 2nd in the 100 breaststroke.

The Roughriders’ relay teams also performed well, taking 3rd in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, and 2nd in the 400 freestyle relay.

In NWAC soccer, the Peninsula Pirates dominated Everett.

  • The Pirate women rolled to a 7–0 win, led by Shiori Shintaku with two goals.
  • The Pirate men blanked Everett 5–0, with Jeremy Obah scoring twice.

Tonight in prep soccer, Port Angeles visits 9th-ranked North Kitsap, while Sequim travels to Olympic — both matches start at 7 p.m.

The Sequim Wolves need a big win at Olympic tonight to stay in contention for fourth place in the Olympic League.

Roughrider junior Morgan Politika (#11) uses a header to pass the ball to junior Addi Fox (#5). Port Angeles needs a win over North Kitsap tonight to stay in the hunt for second place in the league.

In volleyball, Port Angeles is on the road at North Kitsap, and Sequim travels to Olympic. Both matches begin at 6:30 p.m.
