PORT ANGELES — A late-night fire destroyed multiple barns on Mount Pleasant Road Friday night, drawing a large response from several area fire departments.

Clallam County Fire District 2 was called just after 11 p.m. to the 3300 block of Mount Pleasant Road, where crews arrived to find a large hay barn fully engulfed in flames and spreading to nearby grass and outbuildings.

With several barns burning and a travel trailer, farm equipment, and a nearby home threatened, firefighters shifted to defensive operations to protect surrounding property. Mutual aid was requested from the Port Angeles Fire Department and Fire Districts 3 and 4, along with support from Clallam County PUD and the Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters faced limited water supply early in the response, requiring water tenders to shuttle water from a hydrant at the bottom of the hill. Once supply was established, crews poured about 20,000 gallons of water onto the blaze.

One of the barns contained black powder, creating an added hazard for responders. Crews knocked down the main fire shortly after midnight and remained on scene until about 3:30 a.m., with one engine staying overnight for fire watch. Firefighters returned Saturday morning to help the property owner overhaul smoldering hay piles.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
