PORT LUDLOW — A Port Ludlow man is in custody after a tense standoff Sunday that drew law enforcement from across the North Olympic Peninsula.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says a sergeant tried to pull over a speeding driver, but the man didn’t stop until he reached his home. When deputies tried to arrest him, he resisted and ran inside. Pepper spray was used but had little effect.

A short time later, neighbors called 9-1-1 to report the man walking through their backyard with a shotgun. That prompted a major response involving the Sheriff’s Office, Port Townsend Police, and the Washington State Patrol.

The suspect later called 9-1-1 himself, and with the help of drone technology, officers located him hiding in a heavily wooded area. Members of the Peninsula Crisis Response Team and K-9 units from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and Port Angeles Police helped bring the situation to a safe end. Police did not release the name of the suspect.

The shotgun was recovered.
