PORT ANGELES  — A large law enforcement response Thursday morning to a reported hostage situation in the 800 block of South Pine Street was ultimately determined to be unfounded, according to Port Angeles police.

We reached out to the Port Angeles Police Department for comment and received the following email from Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada:

“Thursday morning in Port Angeles we responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 800 block of South Pine Street.

Additional details included that a male suspect armed with a hunting rifle had taken a woman hostage and was holding her in the back yard.

We deployed resources in an effort to ensure the safety of everyone in the area while we investigated the report.

The investigation confirmed that the incident did not occur, and that the caller was suffering some type of mental crisis.

Efforts are ongoing to link the caller with behavioral health services.”

The incident appeared to be cleared by 10:45.
