PORT ANGELES — In high school bowling action yesterday, Olympic topped Port Angeles 5–2 with a pin count of 1,555 to 1,458.  Kendairme Ring earned high-game honors with a 158. Leilah Franich rolled a 151 and Zoey Van Gordon added a 147 for the Roughriders.  Port Angeles faces Sequim on Monday at Laurel Lanes.

The Peninsula Pirates men’s basketball team opens its season tonight at the Green River Crossover Tournament in Auburn. The Pirates will play three games in three days, and all of them will air here on KONP Newsradio.

It’s the debut for new head coach A.J. DeMond, who’s navigating a full rebuild after three key players from last season did not return. Only two members of last year’s active roster are back: 6’5” sophomore shooting guard Paxton Heitsch of Union High School, and 6’4” sophomore guard Cinco McNeal of Las Vegas.

The good news is the return of 5’11” sophomore point guard Patrick Odingo out of Perth, Australia, who sat out last year with a knee injury.

DeMond also brought in new talent, including 5’8” sophomore guard Isaiah Beauchamp, who played high school ball at Jesup Scott in Toledo, Ohio, and averaged 8 points per game last season at Miles City College in Montana.
Sam Tekeste, a 6’1” freshman guard from Lincoln, California, redshirted last year and is expected to be part of the regular rotation. Trey Demment, a 5’10” shooting guard, helped lead Sitka, Alaska, to last year’s state title game.
The Pirates also added 6’5” forward Parker Lambert, a three-sport athlete from Middleton, Idaho, and much-needed size in 6’10” post Titus Driver from Rigby, Idaho.

The coaching staff says former Port Angeles Roughrider standout Gus Halberg is progressing well and, like most freshmen, is learning to play NWAC-level defense.

Tonight’s opener against the Clark Penguins tips off after our pregame show at 5:45. Oly Archibald has the play-by-play, with former All-State Decatur Gator Andre Pleasant — a Yakima College teammate of Kasey Ulins — on color.

Peninsula men’s head basketball coach A.J. DeMond opens the season tonight in his debut against Clark College.

And Friday, Port Angeles senior pitcher Cody Williams will sign his letter of intent with Skagit Valley College at Port Angeles High School.

Roughrider pitcher Cody Williams, seen here during a KONP Newsradio postgame show, will sign his letter of intent this morning with Skagit Valley College.

Roughrider 5th-grade basketball players Ryleigh Baker, Evelyn Fernie, Brenna Burien and Brooke Ulin spent time with Fresno State star Millie Long at the UW game Wednesday night.
