Atmospheric River Aims at Peninsula, Bringing Days of Heavy Rain and Flood Risk

PORT ANGELES – A powerful atmospheric river is forecast to bring significant weather impacts to the North Olympic Peninsula beginning Monday, with heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for flooding and landslides throughout the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, moderate to heavy rain is expected across the region starting Monday, with river levels rising sharply and many waterways likely to reach or exceed flood stage by Tuesday. Widespread river flooding is forecast, particularly in areas draining the Olympic Mountains.

In Port Angeles, Port Townsend, and surrounding areas, residents should prepare for gusty winds Monday afternoon and evening, with potential for downed branches, power outages, and minor property damage.

The rain will persist through midweek, with the most significant flooding expected on Wednesday. Moist soil conditions will also increase the risk of landslides, especially in areas recently affected by wildfires.

Minor coastal flooding is possible along the Strait of Juan de Fuca through Wednesday, especially during high tides. Compound flooding could occur as swollen rivers meet higher-than-normal tidal surges.

Conditions may begin to ease by Thursday, but some rivers, particularly those with slower response times, could remain at or above flood stage into the weekend.
