LOCAL SPORTS: Port Angeles, Peninsula Teams Deliver Mixed Results in Busy Hoops Weekend

The Port Angeles Roughriders boys basketball team evened their record at 1–1 with a complete team effort, rolling past North Mason 68–52 in Belfair.

Down 36–35, the Riders caught fire from the three-point line and dominated the glass, storming ahead 56–44 heading into the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Brody Pierce, at just 6’2″, poured in 16 points with a pair of threes and punctuated the night with a two-handed, game-sealing dunk late in the fourth.

Junior Ashton Gedelman drained four threes and finished with 15 points, while senior Hunter Flores was outstanding inside and out, scoring 12. Junior John Ruddell added 8, and junior Dan Benoit again gave Kevin Ruble quality minutes off the bench, knocking down two threes for 6 points.

Port Angeles will host Scott Orness’ well-coached Bainbridge Spartans tomorrow night.

The Roughrider girls fell Saturday night to powerhouse Neah Bay, dropping their fourth straight, 64–27. The defending three-time state champion Red Devils led 34–13 at halftime and showed once again why they’re among the best in Washington.

Senior Angel Halttunen—one of the top defensive players in the state—held Rider leading scorer Lindsay Smith to just 6 points. Smith averaged 16 per game last season. Halttunen also impressed offensively, scoring 17 with three threes.

Senior point guard Q Greene ran the Red Devil uptempo attack beautifully and finished with 15 points. Senior Cerise Moss added 12.

And the future looks strong: eighth-grader Hellen Martin came off the bench and hit two quick threes, and eighth-grader Dia Greene added 4 points.

The Peninsula Pirate men earned their first win of the season, beating Grays Harbor 79–58.

Parker Lambert led the Pirates with 22 points. Patrick Odingo scored 15, and 6’10” Titus Driver from Rigby, Idaho posted a 10-point, 17-rebound performance. Off the bench, Sam Tekeste added 10.

Former Roughrider Gus Halberg got his first start and scored 9 with 2 assists, while former Sequim Wolf Ethan Melnick scored 5, handed out 3 assists, and grabbed 2 rebounds.

The Pirates travel to Eugene for three straight games at Lane College beginning Friday.

The Peninsula Pirates women’s team—now healthy—caught fire over the weekend, winning all three games of the Pirate Classic.

On Friday they topped a strong 4–1 Chemeketa squad 80–62. Saturday the Pirates knocked off 6th-ranked Lower Columbia 60–54. And Sunday, in a game you heard on KONP, they rolled past Tacoma 80–48.

Alecsis Smith averaged 13 points per game across the three victories, Aspen Fraser averaged 13, and Kimberlee Brown added 10 per game.

The Pirates head to Green River College for three games this weekend, starting Friday at 7 p.m. against Clark. You can hear that game—and Saturday’s 2 p.m. matchup with Green River—right here on KONP Newsradio.
