In high school basketball tonight, the Olympic League landscape has changed dramatically. For several years, a North Kitsap–Port Angeles boys matchup meant top-ranked teams, state-recognized coaches, and a packed Roughrider gym. That’s no longer the case.
North Kitsap has fallen sharply from where it was just two years ago. The Vikings are 1–4, with blowout losses to Burlington-Edison 72–27, Gig Harbor 79–13, and Fife 71–28. They’re losing by an average of 34 points per game.
Former Viking head coach Scott Orness is now leading a talented Bainbridge squad, while former Roughrider head coach Kasey Ulin is coaching his daughter’s fifth-grade team to a state tournament.

Former North Kitsap head coach Scott Orness, pictured with Oly Archibald during a Port Angeles–Franklin Pierce boys state tournament broadcast, is now the head coach at Bainbridge, replacing Will Harris, who has moved on to coach with USA Basketball. Orness’ son, Cade, is a freshman playing at Gonzaga.
As expected, it’s shaping up as a two-horse race between Bremerton and Bainbridge, with North Kitsap, Kingston, and North Mason battling to stay out of the league basement.
North Kitsap tips off tonight at Port Angeles at 7:00.

North Kitsap is 0–3, with losses to Mount Vernon 51–30, Olympic 49–39, and Kingston 43–41.
Again, it looks like a two-team race between Port Angeles and Bainbridge, although the Spartans appear to have reloaded after graduating four seniors. Bainbridge has been impressive with blowout wins over Central Kitsap 54–31, South Kitsap 59–24, and Sequim 54–31.
The Roughriders tip off at North Kitsap tonight at 7:00. You can hear the broadcast right here on KONP Newsradio, with the 6:45 pregame show. Oly Archibald and Dustin Clark have the call.
