PORT ANGELES — Last night, the Peninsula Pirates men’s basketball team finally played its first home game of the season after starting 1–11 on the road.

In a game that went down to the wire, the Pirates couldn’t come up with the big shots or key stops late, falling to the Highline T-Birds 66–62. Highline evened its record at 5–5.

Two stat lines told the story. The Pirates committed 14 turnovers, which the T-Birds turned into 19 points, while Peninsula scored just eight points off seven Highline turnovers. Free throws were also a factor, as Highline went 15 of 27 from the line, while the Pirates were 5 of 9.

Sophomore point guard Patrick Odingo kept Peninsula within reach all night, scoring 19 points, hitting 5 of 9 from three-point range, and handing out six assists. Parker Lambert added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Former Sequim Wolf Ethan Melnick turned in the best performance of his young Pirate career, scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds in 20 minutes, including a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer. Originally brought in as a possible redshirt, Melnick has exceeded early expectations.

Former Sequim Wolf Ethan Melnick turned in a strong performance against Highline, scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds.

In swimming action, Port Angeles cruised past Klahowya 133–24. All three Roughrider relay teams won their heats. Individual wins came from Edward Gillespie in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Adam Kaminski in the 100 freestyle and backstroke, Jensen Wolfe in the 50 freestyle, Thomas Jones in the 500 freestyle, and Caige Lovell-Komatsu in the 100 butterfly. Miles Van Denburg also qualified for state in the 200 freestyle.

On the hardwood tonight, eighth-ranked Bainbridge visits Port Angeles for a 7:00 tip-off. And a programming note: Monday’s Roughrider girls basketball game against Onalaska has been moved to a 1:30 start.
