PORT ANGELES — A Sequim man has been sentenced to a year in jail for a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a teenage boy.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Stanley sentenced Cole Douglas of Sequim to 12 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to vehicular assault and hit and run.

Prosecutors say the incident happened the night of March 31st of last year. Court records show Douglas got behind the wheel of his car after a person living with him reported he appeared to be “high.” Just before nine o’clock, Douglas turned onto West Spruce Street in Sequim, where several teenage boys were walking.

Douglas struck a 13-year-old boy who was riding a skateboard, knocking him into the air before he hit the pavement. Prosecutors say Douglas then drove away, despite others at the scene trying to get him to stop.

The boy suffered severe head injuries requiring emergency brain surgery, along with a broken pelvis and other injuries, and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Douglas was later located in Oklahoma and extradited back to Clallam County.

In addition to the jail sentence, Douglas was ordered to serve 12 months of community custody, complete a substance-use disorder assessment and treatment, and is prohibited from driving during that time.
