Sheriff’s Office has tips as mail thefts spike

mailbox

Port Angeles – The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an increase in mail theft incidents throughout the county. Several residents have reported mail stolen from their mailboxes, including credit cards that were later used to make thousands of dollars in fraudulent purchases.

Here are some of the precautions the Sheriff’s Office is recommending for residents:

  • Sign up for US Postal Service Informed Delivery to receive notifications of incoming mail
  • Consider using mailbox sensors or smart mailbox alert systems that notify you when mail is delivered or accessed
  • Retrieve mail as soon as possible after delivery
  • Use locked or secure mailboxes when available
  • Place mail on hold when you’re out of town

Public awareness and timely reporting are critical in helping deputies identify suspects and prevent further thefts, so they ask that you report suspicious or criminal activity immediately to Dispatch at 369-417-2459 (choose option 1)

And call 911 for crimes in progress or emergencies.
