LOCAL SPORTS: Pirate Men Fall Late at Everett, Women Rally; Roughrider Swimmers Dominate Kingston

EVERETT — In NWAC basketball action, the Peninsula Pirates men shot the lights out in the first half against Everett, but once again saw a late lead slip away, falling to the Trojans 82–77.

The Pirates knocked down 10 of 20 three-point shots and shot 43 percent from the field in the first half, building a 42–37 lead and going up by as many as eight points.

In the second half, Everett heated up while Pirate shooting cooled off. Free throws again proved costly, with the Pirates hitting just 5 of 10 at the line, while Everett went 10 of 13.

Patrick Odingo led Peninsula with 21 points. Parker Lambert added 16. Paxton Heitsch and Cinco McNeal each scored 11, and Sam Tekeste finished with 10 points. Former Roughrider Gus Halberg logged 13 minutes, scoring six points with two rebounds and an assist.

On the women’s side, the fourth-ranked Pirates, now 5–0 in conference play and 13–4 overall, struggled through an ice-cold first half and trailed Everett 25–23 at the break. Peninsula turned things around in the second half, pulling away for a 60–47 win.

The Pirates shot just 29 percent from the field and went 0-for-9 from three-point range in the first half. For the game, Peninsula hit 9 of 20 from the free-throw line.

Aspen Fraser led the Pirates with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Carliese O’Brien also scored 13 points, adding six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Former Neah Bay Red Devil Ryana Moss finished with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kimberlee Brown chipped in seven points, four rebounds, four assists, and five steals, while Makena Patrick added six points and eight rebounds.

Pirates six-foot forward Aspen Fraser scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds against Everett.

Pirates point guard Carliese O’Brien turned in a strong all-around performance against Everett with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

The Pirates return home Saturday for a tough matchup against Olympic. The men tip off at 2:00, with the women to follow at 4:00.

In high school swimming action, it was another dominant day at the Kingston pool for the Roughriders, who defeated Kingston 128–49.

First-place finishers included Miles Van Denburg in the 200 freestyle; Adam Kaminski in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle; Liam Sholinder in diving; Thomas Jones in the 500 freestyle; Isaac Meek in the 100 backstroke; and Jebow Nabua in the 100 breaststroke. The Roughriders also swept the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.
