SEQUIM — Firefighters were called out early Sunday after a recreational vehicle caught fire in Sequim.

Clallam County Fire District 3 crews responded at 3:11 a.m. to a reported structure fire at 492 West Alder Street. The property owner, who was living in a 28-foot Collins Fifth Wheel as a primary residence, woke up to intense heat inside the RV and was able to get out safely.

Engine crews from Station 34, located just across the street, arrived to find pressurized smoke pushing from a roof vent over the bathroom area. Firefighters deployed a hose line and, when they opened the front door, flames vented through the roof. Crews quickly knocked down the fire using a one-and-three-quarter inch handline.

Firefighters entered the RV to conduct a primary search and extinguish remaining hot spots. Additional crews from Stations 33 and 37 moved into Sequim to provide coverage for other emergency calls. Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue also responded but was released once the fire was under control.

Fire District 3 sent three engines, a medic unit, a battalion chief, and two volunteer investigators to the scene.

The homeowner was not injured. The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist with temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
