TUMWATER — The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations says its probe into a deadly police shooting in Port Angeles remains active, 90 days after the incident.
The investigation centers on the November 17, 2025, shooting death of 39-year-old Matthew Tyler Charles during a law enforcement operation in a residential neighborhood. Authorities say Port Angeles officers were assisting the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team when an encounter occurred and officers discharged their weapons. Charles died at the scene.
Investigators say only officers with the Port Angeles Police Department fired their weapons. Deputies from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Sequim Police Department responded but did not use deadly force.
So far, agents have canvassed 70 homes, collected about 40 videos — including 35 body-worn camera recordings — and submitted 35 items, including firearms, for lab testing. One public tip has been received.
An agency liaison continues working with Charles’ family, and outreach has included the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs.
A final report will be released and forwarded to prosecutors once the investigation is complete.
