LOCAL SPORTS: Pirates Dominate NWAC Honors; Riders Open State Tournament Play

PORT ANGELES — The NWAC All-Region teams have been announced, and the Peninsula College Pirate basketball programs are well represented.

On the men’s side, sophomore Patrick Odingo was named Second Team All-North Region. The Perth, Australia native led the Pirates in scoring at 15 points per game, shooting 43 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free-throw line.

For the women, head coach Alison Rose was once again named Northern Conference Coach of the Year. Rose has led the Pirates to five consecutive conference championships, 54 straight conference wins, and an impressive 67-3 conference record over the past five seasons.

Pirates post Alecsis Smith was named Conference MVP. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Bay City, Michigan dominated inside, averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 52 percent from the field.

Pirate sophomore Alecsis Smith was named North Region Most Valuable Player.

Former Neah Bay standout Ryana Moss earned First Team All-Conference honors and was also named to the All-Defensive Team. Moss averaged nine points per game and shot 34 percent from three-point range.

Pirate forward Makena Patrick was named Second Team All-Conference and also earned All-Defensive Team honors. The 5-foot-9 sophomore from Anaconda, Montana averaged nine points and six rebounds per game.

Meanwhile, the Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball team heads to Yakima today to face fifth-seeded Archbishop Murphy in the 2A State Tournament. The Wildcats, a private school in Everett, compete in the WESCO 2A/3A South — widely considered one of the toughest leagues in the state.

Archbishop Murphy averages 65 points per game while allowing just 41. The Wildcats are led by Division I prospect Brooke Blachly, a 5-foot-8 senior headed to Santa Clara University who averages 30 points per game — including a 45-point performance against Edmonds-Woodway.

They also feature 5-foot-8 junior Ashley Fletcher, who averages 14 points per game, and 5-foot-11 junior Celine Wright, who adds 15 points per contest.

Archbishop Murphy shooting guard Brooke Blachly, a Santa Clara University signee, averages 30 points per game.

The Roughriders and Wildcats tip off tomorrow at 12:15 at the Yakima Sundome in a loser-out matchup.
