PORT ANGELES — A new symbol of unity could soon be added to the Port Angeles waterfront.

Members of the Nor’Wester Rotary Club and representatives of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe presented a proposal to install a Peace Pole at Pebble Beach Park during a presentation to the Port Angeles City Council.

Organizers say the project is a partnership between Nor’Wester Rotary, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, and the City of Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department.

Nor’Wester Rotary Past President Sean Simmons says the project  is intended to create a place for reflection while highlighting the region’s cultural diversity.

“So what is a Peace Pole? A Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, bearing the message ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ in different languages on each of its four sides. The Peace Pole will serve as a visible and lasting symbol of unity, respect, and shared humanity,” said Simmons.

The proposed pole would feature the message written in eight languages, including Klallam, along with several international languages reflecting cultures around the world.

Carmen Watson-Charles is the cultural manager for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe.

“This honors the connection with our tribal community members and celebrates the peace we are committed to helping build in Port Angeles, which we say together. This project demonstrates the power of partnership. By working together, we strengthen our community and create spaces that reflect our shared values.”

Supporters say placing the monument at Pebble Beach Park would create a visible reminder of peace and cooperation for both residents and visitors along the waterfront.

Organizers are awaiting formal city approval but hope to install the pole soon.
