Port Angeles – In early March, the City of Port Angeles conducted a survey to gather feedback on conceptual design options for the Laurel Street Stairs Replacement Project. Over a two-week period, they received an impressive 900 survey responses.

A preliminary review of responses highlighted several key words and interests amongst community members, including “fountain and water features,” “project cost and budget,” “public safety and security,” “color and visual aesthetics,” and “mural artwork and design.” Results show a near even split in preference between Option A (Monumental Stairs) and Option B (Community Plaza).

Given the volume of input received, the City is taking additional time to carefully compile and analyze the data.

During the Parks & Recreation Commission meeting on March 19, the Commission moved to form a sub-committee consisting of three Commissioners, City staff, and local stakeholders. This group will further deliberate the conceptual design options incorporating the public feedback they received, and later a design recommendation will be made to the City Council. Once the design is approved and finalized, City staff will pursue grant funding for construction.
