PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man convicted of illegally possessing firearms has been sentenced, but will remain out of custody for now.

James Murray received a 21-month prison sentence after a jury found him guilty on two counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. However, the sentence has been stayed pending appeal.

The case stems from a December incident when Murray’s wife called 9-1-1, reporting he was removing guns from their home. Police later found two firearms, including an AR-15-style rifle and pistol, along with ammunition in a vehicle at the scene.

Prosecutors say Murray admitted purchasing the weapons and intended to move them, despite being legally prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior convictions.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Steve Johnson opposed delaying the sentence, arguing it weakens the deterrent effect of the punishment.
