SEQUIM — The Sequim City Council has unanimously approved a letter of support for a proposed federal land transfer backed by the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, after delaying action on the request last month.
The letter supports legislation being prepared by Emily Randall that would place the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge and Protection Island into tribal trust, shifting the land from federal ownership to the tribe.
The proposal would require approval from Congress.
Public comment at Monday night’s meeting was entirely opposed, with speakers raising concerns about transparency, oversight, and potential long-term impacts.
Tribal leaders have said the transfer would restore ancestral lands while maintaining conservation protections and public access.
Clallam County commissioners have also been asked to provide a similar letter of support but have not taken action.
Any decision by local governments would be advisory, with final approval resting with Congress.
