As roof framework goes up, Restore the 4 campaign gathers steam

the-4-2026-edit

Port Angeles – The decades-long effort to Restore the 4, the century-old locomotive on display in Port Angeles, reached a major milestone this week with the construction of the steel framework for a shelter.

The 4, for those of you not familiar with it, is Rayonier Locomotive #4. It’s one of only six remaining Willamette-style locomotives, which for years has been displayed on the corner of Chase Street and Lauridsen Boulevard.

Having the frame and trusses in place in preparation for the next step, the roof installation, which will allow for the cleanup and repairs on the locomotive itself.

The construction milestone also marks the start of a new fundraising campaign. Organizers just announced that donations received now through May 30 are eligible for a matching grant. Specifically, the first $100 of all new donations will be matched by a local party who wishes to remain anonymous.

There’s more. Restore the 4 is looking for local craftspeople to assist with the locomotive restoration work. Talents such as painting, media blasting, metal welding and repair, window replacement, and refurbishment of wood components are needed.

Finally, send in your favorite photo of the 4 — anything from “historical” photos of the 4 in operation, to photos of the current restoration work, or anything in between. They’ll share it on the website, and you’ll be entered into a drawing for prizes.

Entries can be sent to fixthe4@yahoo.com.

And to donate, go to restorethe4.org.
