PORT ANGELES Volunteers are getting ready to roll up their sleeves this weekend for the sixth annual “Big Spruce Up,” a community cleanup effort aimed at freshening up the downtown and waterfront areas.

The event, organized by the Port Angeles Waterfront District, brings together local service groups, businesses, and residents for a morning of hands-on work — everything from removing moss and weeds to cleaning public spaces along the waterfront.

Executive Director Sam Grello says the effort has become a spring tradition, with dozens of volunteers turning out each year to help improve the look and feel of the city.

This year’s focus includes Front Street between Peabody and Lincoln, where volunteers will remove moss from a long-neglected retaining wall, as well as cleanup work around City Pier, the waterfront, and the area near Field Arts & Events Hall.

Grello says one notable change this year: there are no major blighted properties needing attention — something he sees as a sign of progress after years of targeted cleanup efforts.

Organizers say the event runs from 9 a.m. to noon, starting at the Lot B parking area on West Front Street. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and tools, while supplies like trash bags and refreshments will be provided.

Last year’s effort drew more than 100 volunteers, removing thousands of pounds of debris — and organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout this time around.
