LOCAL SPORTS: PA and Sequim Get District Baseball Wins, Tough Softball Loss and College Track Success Highlight Busy Day for Local Athletes

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles and Sequim baseball teams both won their opening-round District 3 playoff games and have advanced to today’s quarterfinals.

The Roughriders used ace pitcher Kody Williams to shut out Bremerton 5-0.
Williams pitched six innings, striking out seven with no walks and allowing just four singles.

Relief pitcher Parker Pavlak earned the save, retiring the final three batters after walking the leadoff hitter in the seventh.

Port Angeles scored in the first inning when Owen Leitz singled and stole second base before Carson Waddell drove him home with a single.

The Roughriders broke the game open in the fifth with three runs. Ian Smithson led off with a double, while Zach Debray, Bryce DeLeon and Carsten Seibel all singled as Smithson, Debray and DeLeon scored.

Port Angeles added an insurance run in the sixth as Ethan Swenson singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Zack Debray single.

The Roughriders have now beaten Bremerton in nine straight games, including seven shutouts.

Port Angeles travels to Fife today to face the second-seeded 17-4 Trojans. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio, with the pregame show beginning at 3:45. Oly Archibald and Greg Thomas will have the call.

Former Roughrider player and first-year head coach Wyatt Hall joined the KONP postgame show after leading Port Angeles to within two wins of a state tournament berth.

The Sequim Wolves won a dramatic 4-3 game at Franklin Pierce, scoring the winning run in the seventh inning.

Wolves pitcher Zeke Schmadeke was dominant, throwing a one-hitter with eight strikeouts over five innings.

Devyn Dearinger closed out the game, pitching the final two innings with three strikeouts and no hits or walks allowed.

At the plate, Lincoln Bear doubled and walked twice. Conner Oase singled and scored a run. William Kuperus scored a run and added an RBI. Kaden Miller singled and scored, while Dearinger drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI.

The Wolves now face top-seeded and defending state champion Bainbridge today on the road, with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The Roughrider softball team lost to White River 4-3.

Lynzee Reid pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Allison Leitz threw the final 3 1/3 innings, striking out three while allowing one run on one hit.

At the plate, Reid had two doubles and a single. Kennedy Rognlien added two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Morgan Politika hit a double and a single, while Mariah Traband singled and Makkiah Stevens added an RBI single.

At the Cascade Collegiate Conference Track and Field Championships at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, three former Port Angeles Roughriders competed.

Jack Gladfelter won the conference championship in the 10,000-meter run and qualified for the NAIA National Championships May 20th through the 22nd in Asheville, North Carolina, where he will compete in both the 10K and 5K.

Max Baeder of Evergreen State College placed seventh in the 10,000-meter run.

Lily Halberg, competing for Warner Pacific University, ran a personal-best 26.10 seconds in the 200-meter sprint after also competing in the 100-meter dash.
