QUILCENE — A pilot escaped injury Tuesday morning after making an emergency landing in a field near the Highway 101 and 104 interchange in Quilcene.
Quilcene Fire Rescue says crews were dispatched just before 11 a.m. to reports that a small private aircraft was attempting an emergency landing on Highway 101.
While responders were en route, dispatchers learned the plane had safely landed in a field at Boulton Farms off Highway 101.
Fire crews arrived to find the pilot already out of the aircraft and unhurt.
According to Quilcene Fire Rescue, the pilot reported an engine failure that sparked an onboard fire while the plane was in flight. The pilot began emergency landing procedures, used an onboard fire extinguisher to put out the flames, and safely landed the aircraft in an open field.
