Investigators say slain Bothell officer killed by partner in shootout

BOTHELL, Wash. – In a shocking development, charging documents filed today in the fatal shooting of a Bothell police officer say it was the officer’s partner, not the suspect, who fired the deadly shot. Detectives with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) released a report saying they believe the bullet that killed Officer Jonathan Shoop came from his partner’s firearm during crossfire with an armed suspect Monday night.

Shoop, 32, died on scene during a traffic stop. A second officer, Officer Mustafa Kumcur, was also hurt following a gun battle and brief pursuit with the suspect, identified as Henry Eugene Washington.

Prosecutors charged Washington with aggravated first-degree murder and other crimes Friday. They said that Washington began firing into the patrol car after he was pulled over. Shoop and his partner returned fire, and one of the bullets the partner fired from the passenger seat struck Shoop, who was driving, in the head.
