Sequim JCPenney to close permanently after Christmas

By Pepper Fisher

SEQUIM – The 35 employees of the JCPenney in Sequim learned Thursday their store will be closing permanently in the week after Christmas.

The news comes in the wake of Monday’s announcement that the company had been sold to the Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management Inc., paving the way for them to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy early next year. A news release says the new owners intend to keep the retail giant in business, but will reduce the number of stores to 160. The Sequim store appears to have not made the cut.

A company employee told KONP the location would be transitioning into a liquidation phase soon after closing.
