LOCAL SPORTS: Roughriders get wins over Sequim in volleyball and soccer

Roughrider Goalie Sayla Commerton had 10 saves in the 1-0 win over Sequim

PORT ANGELES — Thursday night, the defending Olympic League volleyball champion Sequim Wolves came to the Port Angeles Roughrider gymnasium with all the big names, accolades, height, and confidence. However, this is a rivalry and when the Roughriders jumped out to 8-0 led in game one you would have thought the Roughriders were the defending league champions. In front of a raucous packed Roughrider student section that would have rattled UCLA, the Roughriders swept their purple-colored sisters from the East in 3 straight games 25-23, 25-23 and 25-19. After a concerning bad outing against Kingston the old General Lily Halberg would not let her teammates give up the ship. Halberg and her young Riders left their blood, sweat and tears on the hardwood to pull off a major upset.

In soccer action, the Roughriders produced a hard earned 1-0 win over Sequim. Roughrider Sr. Ana Petty scored the only goal of the game at the 32nd minute. Sr. Goalie Sayla Commerton was spectacular with 10 saves. Roughrider head coach Daniel Horton was elated with Commerton’s performance. “Sayla had an amazing game in goal and literally saved us time after time. Sequim pushed us from start to finish and we look forward to round 2.

In tennis action the Roughriders defeated 3A Bainbridge 6-1 to go 3-0 on the season. In singles action Reef Gelder won 6-1, 6-3, Nathan Basden won 6-1 7-6, Erik Farley won 6-2 6-4. In doubles action Edun Bailey and Zane Glassock won 6-4 2-6 6-2, Zak Alton and Elijah Flodstrom won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, Luke Flodstrom and Tate Alton won 6-3 7-6. Jacob Miller and Kellen Garcelon won 6-2, 6-4.

In swimming and diving action, the Roughriders faced Class 3A state power Bainbridge. The Spartans won the event 129-54. With 2nd place finishes were the 200 Medley Relay Team with Harper McGuire, Mackenzie DuBois, Yau Fu and Brooke St Luise. Finishing 2nd in the 200 free style Relay were Lizzy Shaw, Sara Wilson, Rachel Cooper and Mackenzie DuBois. In the diving event, the Roughriders swept the event with Yau Fu 1st, Gracie Possinger 2nd and Lynzee Reid in 3rd place.

In the cross country meet at Olympic, the Sequim girls placed 3 runners in top 12, there were 40 runners overall. Kaitlyn Bloomenrader placed 3rd, Liberty Mavy placed 7th and Anastasia Updike finished 12th.

High school football action tonight Bainbridge at Sequim with the kickoff at 7 pm. The KONP 1490 am pre-game show will start at 6 pm. At halftime do not miss the VIP Halftime Show with Sequim Wolves outstanding student athlete Taryn Johnson.

Saturday it’s the Port Angeles Roughriders taking on 5th ranked North Kitsap Vikings at Lumen Field in Seattle. The KONP pre-game show starts at 3:45 pm with the kickoff set for 4:45 pm.
