PORT ANGELES – A “Showdown at Sundown” match-up between the 2nd ranked Sequim Wolves and the Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball teams lived up to the media hype. After trailing by an 18-11 score at halftime, the young Roughriders rebounded from a 10-point deficit and tied the game at 27-27 after 3 quarters. The Roughriders even had a short lead, but the Wolves fed off of 25 Roughrider turnovers and held on for the hard-fought 40-36 win. Sequim junior forward Jolene Vaara was incredible at both ends of the court. Vaara had 10 steals to go with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 15 points. Senior Jelessa Julmist stepped up to have the best game of her career, with 13 points and 8 rebounds. The Roughriders played hard and had a chance to pull off a big upset until the Wolves went up by 8 late in the game. Anna Petty kept the Roughriders in the game with three 3-point shots and 12 total points. Sophomore Lexie Smith had 9 points. The Wolves will host Bainbridge on Thursday the Roughriders will host Bremerton.
In the boys game, the Wolves played their best basketball of the year in the first half trailing the Roughriders by just 7 points 37 – 30. But Roughrider junior Parker Nickerson was unstoppable hitting for 25 1st-half points and a game high of 31including three one-handed slam dunks that sent the Roughrider student section into a frenzy as the Roughriders beat the Wolves 76-49. Tyler Hunter hit for 17 points, Isaiah Shamp had 10 points and Bryant Hoch hit three, 3-point shots for 9 points. The Wolves were led by Vincent Carrizosa with 14 points. and Cole Smithson had 8 points. The Roughriders will travel to Bremerton on Thursday you can hear that game right here on KONP News Radio. In high school bowling action, Klahowya swept the Roughriders 7-0. Abby Robinson had a 2-game high of 280 and Paige Pangro threw a 242. The Roughriders have their last home contest Thursday against Klahowya.

College basketball action tonight has both Peninsula basketball teams ranked 2nd the NWAC. The Pirates travel to Bellevue with the women tipping of at 5 pm and the men at 7 pm. Both games will be broadcast right here on KONP News radio.
