PORT ANGELES – Residents and businesses around the Port Angeles area cleaning up after a deluge of rain brought near flash-flood conditions yesterday afternoon.
About 3 pm, more than an inch of rain suddenly dropped on the region. All the rain dumped in less than half an hour. That rapid, hard rain quickly overwhelmed storm drains. With streets flooded, cars were plowing through a foot of water or more in many places. Streets running south to north became like rivers. It all pushed the water over the curbs and into buildings in many parts of the area.
Although forecasters expected heavy showers in possible thunderstorm cells yesterday, the volume and suddenness of yesterday’s rain caught meteorologists and street crews by surprise.
