PORT ANGELES – As we reported last Friday after the Port Angeles Police-involved shooting of a suspected bank robber on Front Street, when it was confirmed that the PAPD officers used deadly force, the investigation was, as is required by law, assigned to the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team (KCIRT).
That means the Port Angeles Police Department will not be involved in the criminal investigation of the incident, but Police Chief Brian Smith said he will later conduct an internal investigation.
Today (Friday), KCIRT Capt. Aaron Elton sent out his first update on the investigation. It says that on Tuesday, May 7, a forensic pathologist with the Kitsap County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the individual who was killed.
The decedent has been identified as 38-year-old Joseph Jacob Hadden of Port Angeles. The cause of death has been determined to be the result of multiple gunshot wounds of the torso and extremities. Toxicology results from the Washington State Patrol Toxicology Laboratory are pending.
It said that Joseph Hadden had no known criminal history. Details specific to the incident will not be provided at this time because it is still under active investigation, which is common practice.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
The statement ends with: “We encourage anyone with information related to this case to call Sgt. Brandon Myers of the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office at (360) 337-5683.”
