LOCAL SPORTS: High school tennis, football, volleyball and soccer news

PORT ANGELES — Brian Gunderson’s Roughrider tennis team got off to its usual strong start, participating in the South Kitsap Invitational. The Roughriders finished third, trailing only North Kitsap and Class 3A Gig Harbor in the seven-team field.

The highlight for the Roughriders was Nathan Basden and Luke Flodstrom defeating the North Kitsap duo, who finished second in the state last year. Third-place finishers in doubles were Keatyn Hoch and Austin Worthington, as well as Carter Gunderson and Grant Butterworth.

In singles, Sky Gelder finished fifth, and Tate Allen finished sixth.

In high school football action Friday night, Mount Baker scored early and often, taking a 49-22 win over Port Angeles. Mount Baker led 42-0 at the half, and the entire second half was played with a continuous clock.

In the second half, Roughrider QB Jude Wallace scored touchdown runs of 59 and 69 yards. Senior Richard Peterson, who was all over the field defensively, had an interception and a 64-yard touchdown run.

The Roughriders will travel to Forks on Friday night.

The Sequim Wolves earned a hard-fought win over Forks, 35-26, giving first-year head coach Ian Henly his first victory. The Wolves will host Franklin Pierce on Friday night in a game that will be broadcast on KONP Newsradio. Franklin Pierce, who lost to Port Angeles last year in the district playoffs, has one of the top rushing offenses in the state. On Friday night, the Cardinals beat Class 3A Sammamish, 68-6.

In volleyball action, South Kitsap swept Sequim, 3-0.

Port Angeles will open their season tonight at Sammamish, with the first serve at 5:30 p.m.

In girls’ soccer action, Port Angeles travels to Klahowya, with kickoff at 6:15 p.m.
