LOCAL SPORTS: Riders Outlast Wolves in Extra-Inning Thriller, 7-4

BY OLY ARCHIBALD

The Port Angeles and Sequim baseball teams treated fans to an entertaining game in front of a good-sized crowd yesterday in Sequim. The Roughriders jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, only to watch Sequim rally to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, sending it into extra innings. But in the eighth, the Riders pulled away and came out on top with a 7-4 win.

Port Angeles got things started in the third inning when Alex Angevine was hit by a pitch. As he stole second, the Wolves committed two errors, allowing Angevine to race all the way home for the first run of the game. In the fourth, the Roughriders broke it open. Luke Flodstrom singled, Nathan Basden reached on an error, and Trae Hanan followed with a single to load the bases. Then Angevine came through again, driving a shot to the gap in right field that rolled to the fence, clearing the bases and giving Port Angeles a 4-0 lead.

Sequim answered in the bottom of the fourth when Lincoln Bear singled in Brayden White to get on the board. In the sixth, the Wolves inched closer as singles by White, Ethan Staples, and Hunter Tennell brought home two more runs, making it 4-3. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Zeke Schmadeke scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings.

Roughrider shortstop Alex Angevine hit a three-run triple and scored another run as the Roughriders beat Sequim in eight innings, 7-4.

In the top of the eighth, the Roughriders put the game away. Kody Williams and Jordan Shumway each doubled, Josiah Gooding walked, and RBI singles by Flodstrom and Ian Smithson brought in Williams, Shumway, and Gooding to make it 7-4. Kody Williams also had a standout performance on the mound, pitching five strong innings while giving up just three hits and one run with three strikeouts.

The Roughriders will host Sequim tonight at Civic Field, with first pitch set for 6:30. The game will be broadcast live on KONP Newsradio, with the pregame show starting at 6:15.

In other local sports, Sequim travels to Port Angeles today for girls fastpitch softball, with a 4:15 start time. In tennis, Port Angeles visits Sequim with matches beginning at 4:00.

The Port Angeles track team also had an impressive showing at the Arnie Young Invitational at Memorial Stadium in Renton. On the boys side, Easton Dempsey finished sixth in the 400-meter run, Hunter Flores took fifth in the javelin, Brody Pierce placed fifth in the triple jump, and Keatyn Hoch earned seventh in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches. For the girls, Farien Tait had a strong day, placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, seventh in the 200-meter dash, and eighth in the 400-meter dash.
