PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team continues to recruit top-tier talent from across the state, with recent signee Alyssa Carney of Ridgefield High School bringing two 2A state championship rings to Port Angeles. Carney helped lead the Spudders to a dominant win over the local Sequim Wolves in the first round of the state tournament during her junior year.
A 2023 2A Second Team All-State selection, the 5’5″ midfielder also played club soccer with United PDX. She’s known for her high soccer IQ and academic excellence, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning National Honor Society honors.
The Pirates also went out of state to sign Nevada’s North Regional Defensive Player of the Year, Jane Flynn from Galena High School in Reno. Flynn led the Grizzlies to the 2024 4A state championship game and was also named Defensive Player of the Year in the Sierra League, helping Galena post an impressive 17-3-3 record.

On the men’s side, the Pirates signed goalkeeper Max Woithe from Hildesheim, Germany. Woithe played for club team VFV-OC and is known for his exceptional athleticism and highlight-reel saves.

In prep tennis, the Port Angeles Roughriders swept all seven matches against Kingston. In singles play, Bridget Weed won a hard-fought match 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Pyper Alton was dominant, winning 6-0, 6-0. Emma Murray secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
In doubles, Cayleigh Alward and Abby Riffle won 6-2, 6-1; Rylie Medley and Allison Fricker posted a 6-0, 6-1 win; Alyssum Larson and Audrey Rudd earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep; and Hannah Hairell and Jule Getzin wrapped things up with a 6-0, 6-1 result.

On the golf course, the Roughrider boys had an off day, falling to a strong Bainbridge team 154-204. Sky Gelder led Port Angeles with a 49. Cale Wentz and Max Gagnon each shot 50, Tate Alton finished with a 55, Noah Myers shot a 59, and Kolby Charles carded a 60.
The girls team, however, pulled out a gritty 211-216 win over Bainbridge, earning their first victory over the Spartans during the current senior class’s careers. With the win, the Roughriders take sole possession of first place in the Olympic League with a 3-0 league record and 5-0 overall.
Mia Neff led the Riders with a 52, followed by Claire Osterberg, Autumn Wilson Rowland, and Malena Marquez, who all shot 53. Izzy Spencer finished with a 66 and Breanna Furnice carded a 67. The Roughriders will host Olympic tomorrow.

In baseball, Port Angeles dropped a heartbreaker on the road, falling 3-2 to North Kitsap in Poulsbo. The Roughriders will look to bounce back tonight as they host the Vikings at Civic Field, with first pitch set for 4:15. Sequim will host Olympic at the same time.
