Clallam Charter Commission Seeks Public Input on Proposals

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Charter Review Commission is asking residents to weigh in on seven proposed priorities that could reshape county government. An anonymous online survey is open through May 31, 2025, at tinyurl.com/clallamcharter.

Clallam is one of seven Washington counties with a Home Rule Charter, allowing local voters more say in government structure. Every 5 years, a voter-elected commission reviews the charter and recommends revisions for public vote.

The current commission is seeking feedback on the following topics:

  • Whether county commissioners should be elected by district or countywide.
  • Whether commissioners should be barred from participating in non-governmental organizations.
  • Whether an ethics board should be created to strengthen the existing ethics ordinance.
  • Whether to establish a non-regulatory Water Steward position to gather and analyze water resource data.
  • Whether to expand the Board of County Commissioners from three members to five.
  • Whether to change the charter review cycle from every five years to three or 10.
  • Whether to consider ranked choice voting for county elections.

Residents may also send written comments to the county commissioners office and can request a paper copy of the survey there as well.
