PORT ANGELES — Springtime means it’s time to get the racing shells in the water, and that’s exactly what the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association did Saturday in Vancouver, Washington, competing in the U.S. Rowing Northwest Youth Championships.

Danielle Woodhouse placed second in the B Final of the Women’s U17 single race with a time of 10:21.17.
Cooper Disque finished sixth in the B Final of the Men’s Youth single race, clocking in at 8:46.82.

Peninsula Pirate men’s basketball coach Bryce Jacobson has been busy recruiting—both near and far. Jacobson reached all the way to Bonn, Germany, to sign 6’3″ shooting guard Nicolas Hofmann.
Closer to home, the Pirates also signed Sequim Wolves’ 6’3″ shooting guard Ethan Melnick. Melnick averaged 9 points per game for the Wolves and scored in double figures multiple times during the second half of the season.

Former Sequim Wolf Ethan Melnick, shown here during a postgame interview on KONP Newsradio, has signed with Peninsula College.

Former Port Angeles three-sport letterman Jake Felton has wrapped up a solid baseball career at Central Washington University.
Over four seasons, Felton played in 81 games, starting 57 as an outfielder. He finished with 42 runs on 59 hits, including 15 doubles, 29 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases. He closed out his career with an impressive .314 batting average.
The Wildcats went 15-17 in conference play and 25-26 overall this season. Felton will graduate in June with a degree in Physiology.

The Port Angeles Roughrider baseball team is headed east Friday for their state tournament matchup against perennial power Tumwater. The Riders will hold a practice session at Central Washington University ahead of Saturday’s game.

Port Angeles had been riding an eight-game winning streak powered by a relentless pitching staff.  Junior Cody Williams has become the go-to arm for the Roughriders. The nephew of former Roughrider and Atlanta Braves pitcher Jeff Ridgway, Williams is 5-0 on the year with eight starts, 47 innings pitched, and a 1.90 ERA.

Senior Hunter Stratford is 3-0 with three starts, 16 innings, and a 6.10 ERA. Rylan Politika has been solid when healthy, posting a 1-1 record in eight starts over 25 innings with a 2.80 ERA. Junior Bryce Deleon has contributed 16 innings with a 2.10 ERA, while senior Mason Grice has thrown 14 innings and holds a 5.20 ERA. Junior Braydon Martin is 1-1 in three starts with 25 innings pitched and a 3.90 ERA. Senior Alex Angevine also notched a win in relief.

The 11th-seeded Roughriders open the 2A State Tournament Saturday against sixth-seeded Tumwater at Selah High School. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m., and you can catch all the action on KONP Newsradio, with pregame coverage starting at 1:45.
The winner advances to the quarterfinal at 5:00 p.m. against either No. 14 Cedarcrest or No. 3 Selah.
