Carlsborg – Clallam County PUD on Tuesday declared a Stage 2 Water Alert for the Carlsborg, Evergreen, Port Angeles Composite and Panoramic Heights Water Systems.
The PUD is requesting that water utility customers in those 4 water systems begin voluntary water conservation measures.
The PUD’s Nicole Hartman told KONP that the Washington State Department of Ecology expanded their emergency drought declaration last week, to include the Elwha-Dungeness Watershed, citing snowpack and precipitation deficits. According to the District’s Drought Response Plan, a drought declaration meets the criteria for a Stage 2 Alert for the Carlsborg, Evergreen, Port Angeles Composite and Panoramic Heights water systems.
The objective of the Stage 2 Alert is to encourage customers to conserve and prepare customers for additional drought response measures later in the season.
Because the PUD buys water from the City of Port Angeles water system for many of it’s customers, water that comes from the Elwha River, we asked City Manager Nathan West if the city may be following suit with a Stage 2 of their own. West told us, “We are not anticipating this in the near future. Water levels today (Tuesday, June 10) are at 1970 CFS. A Stage II Water Shortage in the City typically includes multiple days below 400 CFS.”
