5-year-old airlifted from wilderness area after being kicked in head by mule

JEFFERSON COUNTY – A Search and Rescue team from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island conducted a rescue of a 5-year-old boy in Jefferson County’s Buckhorn Wilderness Area early Sunday morning.

The team received the alert late Saturday night to rescue a child who had been kicked in the head by a mule. The team launched from the base shortly before midnight and was overhead at the designated coordinates at 5,000 feet about 25 minutes later.

But due to the dense forest, the crew was unable to land, so they inserted rescue personnel while they hovered over the area.

The team was able to extract the child and his mother about 40 minutes past midnight and get them to Harborview Hospital in Seattle just after 1 a.m.
