Roughriders come up two points short against #1 ranked NK

POULSBO – -Those fortunate enough to have a ticket at packed Viking Gym last night, came away with the feeling they had seen one of the greatest high school basketball games they had ever seen.

The defending state champion and #1 ranked North Kitsap Vikings, trailing by four Points with 3:28 left, outscored the Roughriders 9-3 the rest of the way for the 76-74 win. Roughrider 6’3″ Senior Quanah Wheeler had a good look at a 3 ball just before the buzzer to win it but his shot hit Iron. Wheeler was big time in the first half hitting for thirteen of his 17 Points.

The Roughriders ran out to a 6-0 lead and had their biggest lead of the game at 20 – 9 late in the second quarter. Roughrider point guard Sr Xander Maestas was spectacular hitting for sixteen points. Big John Vaara the 6’9″ senior, led the way with twenty points. Wyatt Dunning hit his usual money shots for seventeen points and Soph Parker Nickerson had six especially important points all in the 4th Quarter.

Several J.C. coaches were seen at the game with bags full of scholarships to give. After the game, the Roughriders were physically and emotionally drained but proved to themselves that they have a real chance of winning a State Championship. Mark your calendar for February 10th, that’s when North Kitsap comes to Port Angeles. The Roughriders will travel to Bremerton tomorrow with tip off at 3:30 pm.

Mike Poindexter’s Roughriders earned a big time win over North Kitsap 58 – 34. The win puts the girls’ team firmly in second place a game and a half behind Sequim. Eve Burke lead the way with her career high thirty-three points. Bailee Larson has heated up and hit for ten points and Anna Petty added eight. The Roughriders will host North Mason tomorrow at 1 pm.

In one other boys score Sequim got a big win over Kingston 53-51. The Sequim Wolves girls’ team is at Klahowya tonight tip off at 7:15 pm.
