SEQUIM – Schools in Sequim will open on time tomorrow, but with an increased law enforcement presence because of what District officials describe as concerning graffiti messages that were painted on Helen Haller Elementary and Sequim Middle School over the long weekend.
A posting on the District’s Facebook page today says, “It was discovered, on Sunday September 4th, that threatening messages were painted on two exterior walls at Helen Haller Elementary and on three windows at Sequim Middle School. Communications immediately began regarding facts of the discovery and evaluation of the messages between school administration, central office leadership and local law enforcement. In a summary meeting today and after review of evidence collected thus far, it has been decided that school will reopen tomorrow across the district with an increased law enforcement presence at and around all of our campuses out of an abundance of caution.”
“All threats to our school or students are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. We want you to have the facts so you can purposefully discuss them with your child and emphasize the seriousness of this issue. The theme of “If you see something, Say something” is critical here. If you discover anything that can assist in the continued investigation, please contact us at school or the Superintendent’s office immediately.”
We reached out to School Superintendent Regan Nickels for comment, asking if the threat targeted anyone specifically, and here is her response; “Due to the open and ongoing investigation regarding the graffiti, specific details of its content are not being released at this time so that the investigation is not compromised. The threat was not targeted at a specific person or persons; it was generalized. I thank you for your understanding.”
However, later photos emerged online that showed the graffiti. It included a swastika and a statement to be ready and reference to “Sandy Hook 2”.
